How I got the shot: Double Page spread in Sports Illustrated Dec 2011 Noah Flegal 900 spin

This past summer, I had just heard that Noah Flegal had just landed his first ever 900 and then did it in competition, making him the youngest ever to do so on a wakeboard at 13. With that feat, I knew this kid needed some exposure as no one down here was covering him. I scheduled a shoot with his awesome mom and we shot away. The best part was going to pick him and his posse up at their house early....7 am. Yeah, they werent real awake yet. " Ben, here's $20, can you stop by McDonalds and pick them up some breakfast, his mom said." And so the day began! My main goal was to somehow cover the 900 along with his impressive aerial arsenal. Shooting from the tube first with a Canon 1d mark 3, Tokina 10-17 fisheye at 12mm about 5 feet infront of him got a few shots in the bag to start the day. We then shot the rest from the boat when I was too beat to get pounded on the tube anymore. Thats when I told the driver.... 14 year old Merrette Fay, who is Noah's awesome filmer... to keeping doing double ups at the far end, where the sun would be hitting Noah in a front lit array. I positioned myself to the center of the boat with my Canon Mark 3 with a Canon 70-200 L 2.8 IS set on Manual focus at the center of the end of the rope when he crossed the middle. I also set it at 5.6. This way when I shot the sequence the focus would not change trying to track him and I would also be able to keep him in focus on the far left and right of the frames. I aimed so that I had the far left of the landing covered and the far right of the take off. As soon as he hit the takeoff I held the shutter button down and let the motor drive fire away! After what I remember the third try, he nailed it and we got the shot. I then took the 15+ shots and layered them in photoshop on top of one another on a 12 x 18 inch 300 dpi blank doc and started the process of erasing what was needed and what wasnt, through transparency, and masking techniques. His mom, with all her awesome support really pushed all the sponsors on all the shots especially this one in many markets. This led to his nomination of the SI Kids Sportskid of the year and eventually his win and amazing accomplishment. Sports Illustrated contacted me about wanting to use the photo in their opening spread on him and the rest was history.

The shot above really shows how a fisheye lens can really distort wave size and make things look a lot different than shooting other angles. The top photo was ran in ESM as a feature on Hurricane Katia along with the ones below. Brian Noel, Tanner Strohmenger, Matt Oberman, Cheyne Cottrell and I traveled up to Sebastian Inlet very early in anticipation of the rising swell of Hurricane Katia. Upon arriving at the beach we were pretty disappointed with the dismal conditions and nearly drove back home. Instead we made the most of it and I went out for a swim with the crew. Only to find out that the moon jellies infestation was in full effect and all of us were itching within minutes. I had to get creative and told Tanner and Brian to pull in on the inside bowls. My friend Shane Leon, caught a shot at the same time of the shot published above, so you can really see how it went down and how tiny the waves were. Shot with a Canon Mark 3, Tokina 10-17 mm lens inside an Aquatech DV4 housing and LP1 port, 1/1000 sec f10 manual focus, ISO400. Good work Brian!

Night Lighting / wave lineup shot

Believe it or not, this was my first time ever attempting to shoot lighting. One night I was driving back home and noticed a bunch of lighting towards the ocean. I also knew that it was a full moon and that combo could have potential. I got home gathered my Canon 5d Mark 2 16-35 2.8 II lens, Manfrotto tripod and my Canon intervalometer ( which you can set the camera to fire constantly. I headed down to my favorite and closest beach in Boca Raton, Spanish River and went to work. I shot for about an hour, messing with exposures, angles... you name it, I tried it. Above is one of the better shots I got. My first lighting shot and it ran as the closing image in Eastern Surfing Magazines School's Out for Summer article about a week after. Score!

They are an indoor cycling center with world class athletes that demand precise training that can only be made possible in a controlled environment. They developed the concept, came up with the name and came to me to create the brand. Surf Expo in Orlando Florida is usually one big party for half the people and an insanely long weekend of business for the people actually getting work done. I shot up with a couple local pros to show our faces to sponsors and industry regulars.

Quiksilver brought in the legendary skaters from the 80's for The Quik all 80's Vert Contest with heavy legends such as Tony Hawk, Andy Mac, Christian Hasoi and others. Every photographer there was getting the same shot... right up on the vert ramp in the skaters face or on the side of the ramp on a raised platform. Don't get me wrong, they were great shots but were all seen before and there was no reason to go compete with all them up there when I didnt need to. Capturing the crowd and the interesting venue was much more interesting. In order to light the skater I purposely relied on someone's point and shoot flash. Everytime a skater would go for an air a ton of flashes would fire. All I needed to do was pull a chair over to get above the crowd, set the camera about a half stop down to compensate for the flash I was hoping to get and I would get it. Well, not that easy. security didnt like me standing on tables or chairs so I had to get Quik to tell them I was ok to be up there. About 4 tries into it shooting 10 frames per second it looked as if I had the shot I was looking for. But you never know till you get home. When I did get home, I discovered I got it but it was really busy so that is when I converted it to Black and White. It was shot hand held with a Canon Mark 3, Canon 16-35L II lens with no tripod, raw files converted and touched up in Photoshop and bridge. Nate from Eastern Surfing Magazine was stoked on it!

Hurricane Earl was a day late for many in South FL. We all were driving up and down the coast the day before wasting time, money and confidence in all the reports. Well the next day luckily Cheyne Cottrell and I got up really early and drove straight to Palm Beach, without checking it anywhere. Rolled up on an indicator spot and Saw this....

From that point on we both knew it would probably be one of it not the best hurricane swells this season to hit South Florida. It was a solid 6ft with over head sets. Because of the current and lack of consistent barrels we figured the best thing to do was to shoot from land. There was also only Cheyne to shoot. With only one (pro) surfer in the water its tuff to "lineup" as we would call it. While Chyene paddled out I set off on a hike to find a good spot to shoot. I was carrying with me:
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon 5d Mark 2
Canon 500 L IS lens
70-200 2.8L IS
Tokina 10-17 fisheye
Canon 16-35
Canon 1.4 and 2.0 converters all in my Lowepro pack.

It was a hot day with hardly any wind so the first thing I did was find a semi shaddy spot with some ability to compose other buildings, trees and or people/objects in the foreground. Hiking down the beach trying to find a shady spot and a place to get a little higher was not easy. Eventually I met a security guard willing to let me post up on the wall of a mansion. From there I was able to get all the angles I would like, fill up my water bottle with water from there hose and answer phone call after phone call while I snapped away. Eventually the swell started to die and after a few hours we decided to leave. The photo ran in ESM of Andrew Fletcher was shot just as I was about to leave stepping off the wall still with the camera in hand. Shot with my 500mm lens with 1.4x converter on my Mark 3. While we hiked back to our parking spot we had already planned our next spot to shoot thanks to all the luxuries of modern technology. The day continued with me swimming two more times throughout palm beach county and scoring a barrel session to ourselves at one of the best spots in S. Fl. A good day!

Sporting events are usually pretty similar, but whenever Red Bull takes over things usually take an out of the box thought process in building. They once again didn't let down with a pretty unique wakeboarding and wakeskating event taking place at night at an Olympic training pool complex. A cable runs the entire length of the pool whipping riders into their runs down to one end and then back. You probably missed it!

Last week in short notice we hopped on a plane to NYC to chase the rising swell from Hurricane Igor churning out in the Atlantic Ocean. We met up with our awesome host Justin Gallo who hosted us in his Brooklyn apartment while his girlfriend Alexa put up with us for the 4 days! Great people. Last week the entire East coast surfing population got their wishes to come true for one day. I chased the storm with pro surfers, Matt Oberman, Cheyne Cottrell and Tanner Strohmenger . Cheyne landed two shots, one in Surfline and one in ESM. Tanner got a shot in ESM. A couple lineup shots were also ran.

The Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle

Extreme Engagement Shoot

My good Super athlete friends Tony and Nikki recently got engaged at a mountain top finish at this years Tour de France. Thus, I had to create a little different style of engagement photos. I shot from a truck while they toasted, just like in the tour. We dove off a 3 meter diving board together into the pool and did some underwater stuff as well. Good times!

This summer I teamed up to shoot the Quiksilver / Living Water Surf School Surf Camps in Boca Raton and Pompano Beach, FL. My friend Skeeter Zimmerman charges it with his crew of counslers for 11 weeks all summer long. Every kid gets there very own fisheye water shot in a frame at the end of camp from Boca Raton Photography and Design! How many camps provide that! Above is an article profiling Stevie Andrews, a local shredder from Deerfield Beach, FL. I wanted to give some insight on how I got both the portrait and the half page action shot in the July 2010 issue of ESM magazine. The action shot was taken while on a trip with the Island Water Sports team to Nicaragua in November 2009. On this particular day of the trip we took a boat and found this break just reeling off the rocks all by itself. The shot was taken with a Canon 1d Mark 3 and Canon 70-200 2.8 IS L lens. I was bobbing around in a boat even with the breaking wave, with an excellent boat driver, even though he had no toe nails.....! It was late afternoon so the sun was starting to set, creating a nice contrasting background ad asymmetrical light on the surfer. According to Surfing Mag's Jimmy Wilson, this place has not been shot before, that he has seen, which I thought was pretty lucky that we caught it the way we did. The shot was cropped a little with minor adjustments in photoshop. The portrait was taken in a parking lot as the sun was setting with one light ( a canon 580ex with small chimera soft box attached to a light stand) about 7ft above and to his right being held by my fellow photog and good friend Nathan Hamler. I was trying to get a more dramatic and serious pose out of the shot. Thanks to Stevie for ripping! P.S. try to ignore the half naked dude in the ad on the right, that is not my image!! lol
